Esperanza Rising

Esperanza Rising

Esperanza thought she'd always live with her family on their ranch in Mexico--she'd always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home, and servants. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California during the Great Depression, and to settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard labor, financial struggles, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When their new life is threatened, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances--Mama's life, and her own, depend on it.

  1. After reading the short description of the book and looking at the cover, comment below about your thoughts before reading the book. What have you learned about the Great Depression so far that you see is similar with this book?

    1. I think she will lose almost everything she has and suffer while doing hard labor. I have read about people who were extremely rich, then the Great Depression came and they lived in a cardboard box instead of a mansion. After reading the short description of the book, I have guested that Esperanza is probably rich. But now, the Great Depression hit and I don't think that they will be rich anymore. She will live just like everybody else, no anything.

    2. Holly- I think that she will lose all of her fancy things and have to do hard things to help support her family, also while trying to find a job. So far I think that she is starting to find out about the great depression and soon lose everything and now live like everyone else.

    3. Chloe- I wonder what threatened her enough for her to have to leave her home. The similarities See with the great depression is the difficult circumstances and the financial struggles. One of thoughts is how hard it would be to have to rise above these difficulties because her and her mama's life depend on it and how hard it would be to leave her home. i wonder why her papi isn't coming with them to California.

    4. Hailey- My thoughts are Esperanza and her mother are facing hard times just like other people during The Great Depression, and she just doesn't understand what is happening just like other kids during the Great Depression. I wonder why Esperanza's father isn't in the story very much.

  2. I think that Esperanza will have to face the Great Depression, and that her family might've had financial difficulties, and lost their home and job. Under the difficult circumstances in Esperanza's life, I'm guessing that her family will lose everything, and that they will have to try to start over. Since, on the back cover that I read, it says that Esperanza's mother fled to a camp for Mexican Workers, I think she will be trying to get money to get her life back on track.

  3. That there is suddenly a sudden change that changes her life physically and mentally because of the Great Depression. The Great Depression will now probably make Esperanza and her mom work for their food and probably live in cardboard boxes for a while with hardly any money and little food.

  5. The setting is important to the book because the book wouldn't be the same without it. The author chose this setting for the book because it is the best place for the Great Depression. The setting is a grape farm which is a good place for the Great Depression.

      what is a grape farm?

  6. The setting is important because Esperanza loves the ranch she lives on but now that Tio Luis has control over Papa's land, they will be forced to leave and that will be the start of the Great Depression for Esperanza and her mama. So basically the downfall for Esperanza started when she was forced out of her home. The author chose this setting probably to get the reader to think that nothing could go wrong because the setting was so peaceful and empty.

  10. The setting is the house/ranch it is important because without it papa wouldn’t have left the house/ranch and died and Tio Luis wouldn’t have set the house/ranch on fire because mama said no to Tio Luis when he asked her to marry him. That is why the setting {house/ranch} is important.

  12. Some of the problems that Esperanza and her family has faced is when Tio Luis burns down Esperanza's house and then basically the whole ranch. So now that problem leads to an even bigger problem. Will she be able to make the move from Mexico to California where hard labor and little money and food is promised? Well that problem leads to a family problem how will they get their Visa's and how will they leave Abuelita back in Mexico?

  13. Some challenges that Esperanza has faced is that her father died from bandits, Tio Luis wants to marry mama, and since mama said no to Tio Luis's marriage proposal, Tio Luis is trying to destroy their life and has already burned down their house. Now, Esperanza and her mother and other people are going to California to work for money, but, unfortunately, they have to leave Abuelita in Mexico until she is stronger to come to California.

  14. One of the challenges Esperanza faced is her papa dying and Tio Luis asking her mom to marry him and her saying no to receive harsh punishments. Another challenge is when her house burned down and having to decide either to stay in mexico or go to America and have to leave hip hop abs.

    1. Esperanza's mom decided to marry Tio Luis but Esperanza, Mama, and their servants decided to go to America in the middle of the night, before the wedding. They did this because their servants need jobs, since the house was burnt down and Esperanza couldn't make money and pay the servants. They also went to California so that they could escape from Tio Luis.

  15. I think that the setting is important because it helps the story flow into the great depression and help the reader want to read more. I think the author chose this because it shows that they started out rich and get to fall deep right away into the great depression. the setting sis not change.

    1. In one sentence you didn't use capitol letters and the last sentece doesnt make sence

  16. The setting od Esperanza Rising is Mexico, at there home ranch where they grow roses. this setting is important because the setting helps the story add more drama and its where they live so without them living there the stuff that happened in the story wouldn't of happened and wouldn't have caused them to move to America.

    1. You didn't use capital letters. When you said "stuff that happened" You need to be specific. You also need to tell why the problems that caused them to go to America, but I like it you just need to fix the errors.

    2. In one of the sentences you didn't use capital letters, and I agree and disagree that the setting adds more drama because the setting is just where the book takes place, and maybe the plot would be where the drama would come into to place at. Also, what do you mean by the setting is where the "stuff that happened", maybe you could be more detailed, but overall I liked what you did.

  17. A challenge Esperanza and her mama had to face was papa dying.
Another challenge they had to face was Tio Luis asking mama to marry him and her saying no to him so he tries to make things hard for mama and Esperanza.
There is one more problem mama and Esperanza decide to go to America but they have to leave hip hop abs in Mexico because she is hurt and can't travel.

  18. The setting is important because if it hadn't been a ranch, then papa wouldn't have left the house, and died. Plus, then Tio Luis wouldn't have had to ask mama to marry him, and he also wouldn't have burnt down their house. Also, they wouldn't have to be going to California.

    1. I don't think you can start a sentence with plus, but otherwise it was really great.

  19. Esperanza has faced many hard challenges. Her father was killed by bandits right before her birthday. Since Esperanza's father died, his step brother tried to force Esperanza's mom to marry Tio Luis (Esperanza's father's step brother). But Mama said "no." Tio Luis said that Mama would regret that. Tio Luis started burning Esperanza's house down in the middle of the night. Esperanza's Mom said she would rethink his proposal.

  20. the problem is that Esperanza's uncle wants to marry her mother since her mother said no Esperanza's house was burned down with their crops. Forcing her mom to say yes but, since Esperanza's uncle wasn't her moms type they set out to go to America.

  21. Esperanza has had her papa die and her uncle in law, Tio Luis, wanting to marry her mama but she said no. You'd think that that would be the end of the trouble's, but that night, Tio Luis wanted revenge so he burned down their house. Now the have to travel to America to try to get their new life back.

  22. I chose when Esperanza was rising when the others were having lunch near the truck in California. The painting would show Esperanza rising and tear streams on her face. I would also include Miguel down looking up at Esperanza wide-eyed.

    1. I would probably think like that because the title is called Esperanza Rising for a reason. I do understand that it would be a rather sad though...

  23. If I could paint a scene, it would be of when Esperanza's home was burning down. I would make everything burning and flying into ashes, and draw Esperanza, her mother, and the other people who were there in front of their house just watching with their heads in their hands. To show their emotions, for Esperanza, I would have her crying, and falling onto the ground on her knees. For mama, I would make her crying, too, but she would be talking with the other people, and asking if she and Esperanza could go to America, too. Abuelita would be very, very sad, but trying to stay calm. The painting would be very sad, and emotional.

  24. I chose the scene when the house is on fire. IN this picture the House, Rose Garden, and the land would be on fire. I would show Esperanza's feelings by having everything black and white except the flames, this shows her emotions by telling the readers how devastating the fire was to her and how intense it was.

  25. I pick the scene where they are on thee train where Esperanza's mom is apologizing to the mother of the one child since Esperanza was being very rude. I can just imagine the surprised look on her face. Esperanza's mother with a concerned look on her face while she is apologizing. The girls mom is smiling and explaining that its alright.

  26. The scene I chose was Esperanza and her papa laying on the grass at the rose ranch/house and listening to earths heart beat with her papa. The painting would look like Esperanza and her papa laying on a field of roses and the sun setting in the back ground and papa telling her to lay on the roses and be quiet and listen to the earth's heart beating the painting would be really colorful because it is a happy time.

I would have Esperanza smiling because everything is happy and she is with papa. Papa would be smiling to because he does not know that he is going to die soon.

  27. If I were to paint a picture of them on the train, I would have it looking at the train from Esperanza's point of view. It would show all of the wooden benches in the cart and most of them filled up with peasants on either the benches or on the floor. I would also paint the peasant with the chickens going up to give mama 2 chicken's or the little peasant girl going up to Esperanza and wanting to hold the doll so she would be painted holding out her arms for the doll. To show the characters emotions, I will make the setting look all gloomy and probably make the characters have a gloomy face on. I COULD also have the other peasants looking down and make their faces all dark so they look sad.

  29. Esperanza has a normal life at the camp but then one day Miguel says that he lost his job working on the railroad tracks and Esperanza is mad at him because he willingly switched his job just because his boss told him to. So then they get in a big fight and Miguel tells her that she is not a queen anymore and that life is not served on a silver platter and that they have to just go with the flow if it continues with them having a job that pays them.

  30. Esperanza has to move to a town where she has to do "peasant" duties. Since Tio Luis wants to marry her mom so Esperanza ends up going to America. After that she ends up having to take care of the babies which end up with a wall of diapers. Next she works and finds the person who was mean to her to Esperanza asking for mercy after that Esperanza decides to help Marta. Who was the girl who was mean to Esperanza.

  31. yesterday we read about how Esperanza was worried about how Isabel might feel when they announce queen because no Mexican has ever been queen. Then Esperanza and Miguel got into a huge fight about how Miguel didn't get the job at the train station but instead he got put in the ditches. Miguel said "You are still a peasant, and you still think you are queen." And the fight ended. That's all we read about yesterday.

  32. Yesterday we read that Isabel told Esperanza that her school they were going to be announcing a queen. So Esperanza asked Isabel's mom if any other Mexican at her school had been queen and Isabel's mom said no. So Esperanza and Miguel started to fight about how he should not have let his boss make him go and how there has never been a Mexican be the queen they were fighting about there not being a Mexican be a queen because Miguel thought that Isabel had a chance being queen.

  33. Yesterday I read that Esperanza was really worried about Isabel and if she will get chosen for queen at school, because no Mexican girl has ever gotten chosen before. Although, Isabel has the best grades out of everyone. Then, Isabel starts to pray that she will be chosen to be queen of third grade. Later, Miguel comes home, and is completely dirty, because what he explains is that the Ohio people have taken over his job, and now he has to dig ditches. Esperanza gets very angry at him, because she thinks that he should've stood up for himself, then she runs out the door, and Miguel runs right after her. Then she states everything that's wrong, and needs fixing, and Miguel gets very angry.

  34. Esperanza and Miguel got in a big fight because he didn't stand up to his for himself. Since the sweep people rushed to get new jobs. Miguel's boss said he doesn't need him anymore because they are going to train the new people. His boss said he could lay tracks or dig ditches. He decide to dig ditches. The next day, when Esperanza woke up, Miguel went to northern California to find work.

Esperanza and Miguel get in a big fight about how Miguel didn't stand up for himself when his boss said he had to dig ditches instead of working on the railroads because the Okies said they would work for less money. The next day Miguel feels bad and angry at Esperanza so he left for Northern California to look for a job on the railroads. Isabel also wants to be the queen of the may but she is probably going to be disappointed because no Mexican has ever been queen of the may.

  37. The part of the book I would change is the part when Esperanza is in the market. I would change when she buys the pinata and she doesn't give it to the little girl she keeps, it would not make much of a difference except she wouldn't find it hanging on the tree, and she wouldn't feel upset. The other part of the book I would change is when she finds Marta between the boxes, it would change how Marta feels about Esperanza and Marta might have gotten caught.

    ReplyDelete
  38. if I could change 1 part of the story it would be when Miguel took Esperanza's savings. It's not to be mean or anything but I wish Esperanza could have went back to Mexico, get caught while trying to get Abulita, and be forced to stay in Mexico and have her mama and everyone else have to come get her. That way it would be much more adventurous and have a much more action packed part. And I'm not saying that I did not like the part when Miguel got Abulita to surprise them, I just like a little more adventure in the books that I read. Because of this change it would effect how the whole story play's out in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The part that I would change was when papa left the house, the night before Esperanza's birthday, and he died. I wouldn't have let papa leave the house, because then he wouldn't have died. If he didn't die, then Tio Luis wouldn't have been able to ask mama to marry him, and she couldn't have refused. Therefore, he wouldn't have gotten mad, and burnt down their house. Then, everything would be okay, and they would still be living a good life, and wouldn't have had to move to California. In all, this results to the servants and nobody having to move, and Abeulita would not be hurt or sick and neither would mama.

    ReplyDelete
  40. In the story I would change... Papa would have never died. That would mostly ruin the whole book. Then El Rancho De Rosas would never have been burnt down, Tio Luis wouldn't force Mama to marry her, they wouldn't become pheasants, and they wouldn't have to move to the camp in California where Mama got pneumonia. But there is some down sides to not moving to California: Esperanza wouldn't have met Isabel and Esperanza wouldn't have learned life skills that she needs to know in life to succeed.

  41. If I could change a part from the book I would talk about how Esperanza felt when she was rising on the hill. By felt I mean like to clarify her emotions or add how her feelings mixed together to make her sad and confused. I chose this scene because I also felt that the others weren't involved besides Miguel because they were just sitting in the shade of a tree eating lunch, while Miguel just says Esperanza? You okay? I also thought that Esperanza's thoughts and feelings were a bit confusing.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would change when Esperanza was being rude to the poor little girl because, then she wouldn't have had to feel bad. It would've made her more polite, throughout the story, but she would've not learned her lesson to be more polite to others.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The part of the story that I would change is Papa dying I would make it so that Papa did not die. This would change the rest of the book because Esperanza would not of had to leave Mexico because of Tio Luis and she wouldn't of had to leave Abuelita in Mexico and would not of had to go on a train that had smelly and dirty people. The theme would change because Esperanza would not of had to rise from her depression and try to make things better.

  44. IF I COULD CHANGE A SCENE FROM THE STORY, IT WOULD BE TO CHANGE THE PART WHERE TIO LUIS MADE THE MARRAGE PROPOSAL AND MAMA ACTUALY GOT MARRIED AND TIO LUIS BECAME GOVERVOR AND ESPERANZ BECAME 2x AS RICH AS SHE WAS BEFORE IN THE VERY BEGGINING. THIS WOULD MAKE IT SO THAT ESPERANZA NEVER WENT TO CALIFORNIA.
