The year is 1932, and the McFarland family has been hit hard by the Great Depression. When they lose their home just before Christmas, Grace, eleven, and her two younger brothers are sent temporarily to a children's home. Grace tries to understand: Mama's new baby is due any day, and Grace's beloved older brother, Pete, is terribly sick. Her stay at the mission is cut short when she is invited to spend the holidays with the Hammonds, where they treat her like a daughter. What will happen when it's time for Grace to go home? Are family bonds more important than the security the Hammonds offer her? Inspired by a true story, Saving Grace is a testament to how love and loyalty triumphed during one of the bleakest periods in American history. |
After reading the short description of the book and looking at the cover, comment below about your thoughts before reading the book. What have you learned about the Great Depression so far that you see is similar with this book?
ReplyDeleteA lot of people lost there homes during the great depression and in this book they lost there home too. There father needs to find work because he lost his job in a electricity company, but people lost there money i am guessing because of the stock market crash, so a lot of people lost there money so they did not have the money to pay him.
DeleteAfter reading pages 1-13 tell me about the book so far. What characters have you met? Tell me about the setting of the book and how you know it is set in the time period of The Great Depression.
ReplyDeleteThe main character is Grace, and she has three younger siblings, Iggy, Owen, and Pete. Pete is Grace's older brother. Her mom is pregnant so the kids have to do most of the work for mama. Dad, whenever he gets mad he goes out and looks for food and money. The family lives in a one room apartment house. The family is struggling, but they are all trying to get through it.
DeleteThe characters of the story on pages 1-13 are Mary, Owen, Clement, Grace, Pete, Mama, Iggy. The setting of the book is in the apartment because they do not have the money to pay for a real house.I know it is part of the great depression because people lost there homes that the time so people did not have the money to pay for the house.
Deletetalk about how they did not have food or things to drink

DeleteI remember reading the part about how they had lost their house. That was a big deal to their family, especially the mom.
DeleteThe main character is Grace, and she has 2 younger siblings, Iggy, and Owen. She has 1 older brother, Pete. she has her dad And her mom, and her mom is pregnant. You can already tell that this is in the Great Depression, because they have a 1 room apartment, and they have to go to a fire hydrant to get water for the family.
ReplyDeleteThere are people now who still live in one room apartments, but they have water in them. I agree with you that we wouldn't see them getting water from the fire hydrant. That shows it was during the Great Depression.
DeleteA lot of people did not have homes and they did not have food so they were starving. The cover of the book looks like the girl is homeless. Some people do not have money and there dads are having trouble finding jobs. So they have to live in a cardboard home basically. Also grace is having trouble with all of these things.
ReplyDeleteyou might want to say instead of writing "they live in a card board box" you should at least say they live in a apartment with no heat.
Deletewhy did you put " they basically live in a card board box because they really didn't
DeleteThe main character is Grace and she has a brothers Pete, Iggy and, Owen. They can not afford a house, they have to get water, and they can not afford food. As well their dad is having a hard time finding a job.
ReplyDeleteYou might want to add a little about how the guys jack them and mad dad angry.
DeleteWhat kind of house does Grace and her brothers live in like a real house or an apartment kind of house? Is the house or apartment big or small?
DeleteDescribe and talk about the conflicts Grace has gone through so far in the book. Why is she struggling with both internally (with herself) and externally (things happening to her in the story).
ReplyDeletethe family is struggling because they do not have any food to eat. Grace and Pete steal food to provide for there family. They try to do things to earn money to keep the apartment and have enough money to buy food to eat.
DeleteWhat would happen if your story was in a different setting, would they still have to steal food?
DeleteSome of the conflicts that Grace meet are, having to go to the fire hydrant in the cold morning to get water for her family, and have to go to the dump and walk through all of those rats, even though she has a fear for rats. She is struggling because this is definitely in the Great Depression, and things don't seem so easy as they are today.
ReplyDeleteyou should say what the things from the dump are for
DeleteSome of the conflicts that Grace is and gone through are, having to go to the dump to get bottles of milk to sell to earn money. Another conflict that is happening with Grace is Pete and her have to go to the fire hydrant to get water for the family.
ReplyDeletewere do they get the money
DeleteWhat happened to Graces family that made them have to be poor?
Deletea conflict in this story is that guys came to the apartment building and stole all of there money and they do not have money to proved for the family. She also stole a watch from Mr. Hewitt and they got money for it but they have to pay that guy back. Another conflict is that they do not have running water so they can no do anything.

DeleteThe family is at Uncle Stuarts house wondering where Pete is. Papa and Uncle Stuart go out to look for Pete. The first time they go out to look for Pete they don't find him. The second time they go out to look for him they find him with hobos and a fire. When they bring him home he is sick, he does not look good, and is very cold. Mama and papa want to send him to the hospital, but mama doesn't think they have enough money for Pete to go to the hospital. They are all worried, they wonder when they will find a different home because Uncle Stuart and Aunt Emma barley have enough food for each other.
DeleteTheir mission was to get Pete to the hospital, to get his nose healed, since it was really swolen and possibly broken. Also it talks about how Grace feels like she might not be able to see Pete until Christmas.

Everyone reacts in amazement because there was no light and there was no windows not even 1 and there is only 1 lantern and it was very cold and it is below the basement.
DeleteGrace realises her parents house isent the greatist.Miss Louise and Mr. Jonny are supriesd how the place looks and and how dirty and cold.
ReplyDeletethey all got amazed because the family got a house and it did not have a light. They also got sad because Pete was still in the hospital and they did not know what was going to happen to pete. They were happy most of the time because the family had a house and grace was getting cared for.
ReplyDeleteGrace realizes that her family is in bad shape and doesn't even have a light in their new apartment. Miss. Louise and Mr. Jonny are surprised how poor their family is and doesn't even have a light.
